Food business operator licence from the central food authority by February 4 2013:

Last date for obtaining License/Registration for all existing Food Business Operators is 4th Feb.2014. This date will not be extended any further

 
Failure to register will make you to pay a fine up to Rs.5 lakh and stop food business
Now all small , mid and big food business operators must obtain license from the central food authority,Food Safety and Standards Authority of India,to operate from next month.The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) plans to randomly check food joints across the country after February 4, 2013 ,the deadline for obtaining the licences,an official said on condition of anonymity.

If a restaurant is found without the licence,FSSAI can penalise it and even have it shut down.
There are anywhere between 50-60 lakhs eateries in the country.Under the norms,every restaurant in every city will require a separate licence.In addition,there would a central licence required to be obtained from the head office of that particular food business firm.

FOOD BUSINESS OPERATOR

1) FBO’s: Any undertaking, whether private or public, for profit or not, carrying out any of the activities related to any stage of manufacture, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, distribution of food, imports and including food services, sale of food or food ingredients.
2) Categories : 

1. Dairy units including milk chilling units equipped to handle or process
2. Vegetable oil processing units and units producing vegetable oil by the process of solvent extraction and refineries including oil expeller unit
3. Slaughtering units
4. Meat processing units
5. All food processing units other than mentioned above including relabellers & repackers
6. 100 % Export Oriented Units
7. Importers importing food items including food ingredients and additives for commercial use
8. Food business operators manufacturing any article of food containing ingredients or substances or using technologies or processes or combination thereof whose safety has not been established through these regulations or which do not have a history of safe use or food containing ingredients which are being introduced for the first time into the country
. (They need to apply for product approval at FSSAI (HQ) separately before applying for license)
